  • Candidates must hold LL.B. degree (either 5 year integrated course or 3 year course) from a recognized university for appearing in Judicial Services Examination, which is being carried out by different States.
  • Is there any minimum percentage required for appearing in Judicial Services Examination (Civil Judge)?
  • No.
  • What is the pattern of Judicial Services Examination ?
    1. The exam takes place in 3 stages:
    2. 1. Preliminary Exam
    3. 2. Mains Exam
    4. 3. Viva-Voice or Personal Interview.
  • Is there any provision for negative marking in Judicial Service Examination?
  • It depends from State to State. Most States have no negative marking system.
  • Can a practicing lawyer appear in the Judicial Service Examination?
  • Yes but JATF provide the facility for full time serious aspriants.
  • What is the minimum and maximum age limit for appearing in Judicial Services Examination (Civil Judge)?
  • It is different for different States. However, in general, the minimum age limit is 21 years and the upper age limit is 35 years. Below is the State wise list for age limit:

Haryana 21-42 years.
Punjab 21-37 years.
Madhya Pradesh 21-35 years.
Rajasthan 23-35 years.
Uttar Pradesh 22-35 years.
Uttarakhand 22-35 years.
Himachal Pradesh 22-35 years.
Jharkhand 22-35 years.
Bihar 22-35 years.
Chhattisgarh 22-35 years.
Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Must not have completed 35 years of age.
Gujarat Must not have completed 35 years of age.
Kerala Must not have completed 35 years of age.
Maharashtra Must not have completed 35 years of age.
Odisha 23-35 years.
Tamil Nadu For fresh law graduates – 25-27 years of age, and for practicing advocates – 25-35 years of age.
West Bengal 23-35 years.
Sikkim Must not have completed 35 years of age.
Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh Must not have completed 35 years of age.
  • In almost all the States, upper age limit relaxation is provided for the reserved categorycandidates.
  • What subjects one need to study for Judicial Service Examination (Civil Judge)?
  • There are certain common subjects that come in almost all the States. They are:
    1. 1. Code of Civil procedure
    2. 2. Code of Criminal procedure
    3. 3. Indian Penal Code
    4. 4. Indian Evidence Act
    5. 5. The Constitution of India
    6. 6. Hindu Law (Hindu Marriage Act, Hindu Succession Act, Hindu Minority and Guardianship Act, and Hindu Adoption and Maintenance Act)
    7. 7. Muslim Law
    8. 8. Transfer of Property Act
    9. 9. Registration Act
    10. 10. Limitation Act
    11. 11. Specific Relief Act
    12. 12. Indian Contract Act
    13. 13. Indian Partnership Act
    14. 14. Sales of Goods Act
    15. 15. Law of Torts
    16. 16. English
    Apart from these subjects, all States have some local/additional subjects. Some States also have General Knowledge and Current Affairs as a subject.

  • In UP, there are 4 attempts. And in all other states, one can give exam till he/she reaches the maximum age limit provided by the respective State.
